Plastic surgery is on the rise in Ireland, with more than 100,000 people undergoing procedures last year.
It’s a trend which has been fuelled by an increased interest in the profession in recent years.
The number of people applying for plastic surgery has risen by almost 20% over the past decade, from 10,500 in 2005 to 13,500 this year.
The Irish Society of Plastic Surgeons says that this surge in demand for the procedure was due in part to the popularity of online advertisements and social media.
The Society says that the increased demand for plastic surgeries is largely driven by a number of factors, such as a growing awareness of plastic surgery in the general population, the growth of online cosmetic retailers such as The Face Shop and Cosmeceuticals and the popularity in Europe of cosmetic surgery, such aasoplasty, as well as the introduction of the ‘big five’ cosmetic surgery products.
“People have been seeing cosmetic surgery as a way to make a change, to make their face look healthier and less pigmented,” said Dr James O’Connor, Senior Lecturer in Plastic Surgery at the University of Limerick.
Dr O’Connors own plastic surgery clinic is a popular one, with customers coming from all walks of life.
He says that a number a customers come from as far away as the US and Germany.
“They may come from a country where plastic surgery is not available, or where it’s not covered by insurance, or they may come with a family history of plastic surgeries,” he said.
“Some come with no particular reason, just wanting to have a cosmetic procedure done.”
“They come to us with a whole host of questions, asking questions like how much is it going to cost, what kind of procedures will it involve, and what kind are the side effects?”
He says his staff are always keen to advise patients on the benefits of plastic surgeons services and what the options are.
Dr Peter Loughan, Head of Plastic Surgery, Mayo Clinic, said: “We’re in a period where we have a growing interest in plastic surgery.
We’ve seen the number of patients coming to us increasing in recent months.”
The majority of people have not had a procedure in their lives, they’ve come here because they want a cosmetic surgery.
“If you’ve been a patient and you’ve had a lot of cosmetic surgeries and you’re not happy with the results, we’re here to help you with the next step in your journey to make sure you look good for the rest of your life.”
